Conversations about weather are prominent in the upper Midwest. As though we are ever the optimists in regards to the forecast, we strive to recognize that "at least there is sunshine" on a 20 below day and "the days are getting longer and the sun is getting stronger" in hopes of an early snow melt in the present tundra we call home.
So, what draws people here, and Lord, what keeps peeps here?
Good question. It seems to have a lot to do with our abundance of determination, perseverance, innovation, pick yourself up by your bootstraps, git-r-done kind of mentality. Cue Rod Stewart to start singing, "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You", and so forth comes the inspiration behind Down Home's new Spring Collection, Love My Down Home Peeps. It may also have something to do with the traditional Peeps, shaped like baby chickens (or in our case, bunnies) and made of a soft marshmallow rolled in colored sugar, with eyes made of edible wax. We just couldn't help ourselves.
Fargo is unique as it offers diverse opportunities in the areas of the arts, agriculture, academics, and athletics! And have you checked out the amazing nonprofits in our community? Are you kidding me? I would like list all of them here, but y'all, I would be typing for hours. No joke. That is how rockin' our community is. We have an impressive mix of opportunities and services that could coin us to be an Uptown Down Home Hometown.
In case you haven't noticed, the Fargo-Moorhead area is also a hub for those battling homelessness.
Families served by Down Home are not just from our region, they also arrive from the east coast, Chicago, Minneapolis, and other cities in hopes of escaping poverty, and more often, domestic violence. They have heard of our community as a place to stabilize, and many of them are in awe of our human services. No doubt.
We have phenomenal nonprofits doing powerful, painful, profound, and push-yourself-beyond-your-perceived-limitations kind of work.
Our community peeps are relentless in helping eliminate barriers and build up opportunities for people not just to survive, but for people to thrive. I will say it again: I Love My Down Home Peeps!

My Down Home peeps, Rod Stewart says it best:
"Have I told you lately that I love you Have I told you there's no one else above you You fill my heart with gladness, take away all my sadness Ease my troubles that's what you do
For the mornin' sun in all it's glory Greets the day with hope and comfort too You fill my heart with laughter take away and make it better Ease my troubles that's what you do
There's a love that's divine And it's yours and it's mine like the sun And at the end of the day we should give thanks and pray To the One, to the One"
